T'karonto in 2050

T'karonto, based in North East Turtle Island is in the process of rewilding; returning to traditional ways of being in a world that has expanded beyond the physical reality into infinite virtual metaverses.

Time: Time operates as ‘cycles’ and ‘rhythms’ to align with seasonal cycles and the energetic feeling. There is less of an emphasis on the ‘day to day’ but rather living within the flow of a cycle and a rhythm.

Systems of Care: Decentralized and representative councils guided by Indigenous teachings through fluid leadership models. Local democratic participation and cooperation in rewilding the land and supporting community structures. Centralized support for monthly care income, compassionate settlement, personalized healthcare, shared and free autonomous transportation, and expansive immersive virtual learning environments.

Value Exchange System: Intergenerational land ownership abolished for land stewardship, weakening the tentacles of capitalism. Automated wealth distribution takes effect by considering health status, abilities, vocations, desires within a collective framework. Reparations to Black and Indigenous communities continue, since the 2035 revolution, in addition to monthly care income. Mutual aid, care, and personalized coins used to exchange value and experience creativity. System grounded in the 'flourishing and care of all living species.'

Open Borders: Turtle Island has an ethos of open borders and is collaborating with many nations to support climate relocation. Asylum seekers are supported, but a randomized lottery system allows for a more prepared and compassionate settlement process. Settlers are provided housing (in condos that boomed in the early 2000s), wellbeing, learning, and growth opportunities and are invited to bring their whole selves to elevate various community structures. In exchange, they are asked to enter into land stewardship agreements to support rewilding efforts

Climate: Rewilding is the primary process to bring the ecology of Turtle Island (and other parts of the world) into a reimagined balance. This requires limiting humans in the outdoors, creating space for parts of the living world to heal, and significantly reducing travel to almost none. Lake Ontario levels are rising, CO2 levels being dangerous, extreme heat and cold warnings, and micro-swarms of insects that have overproduced as a survival tactic, are the current realities that are being navigated, while large parts of the city are being transformed into urban forests.

Food and Energy: Massive global food disruptions have led to shifting to self and community sustenance farming, using indoor greenhouses and cooperative models. AlgaeBaby's are a major source of metabolic fuel and are transmuted into biofuel and a material that can be fabricated for functional and sustainable fashion.

Ancestral Intelligence: Ancestors are called upon as guiding forces in recognition of the infinite continuity of existence. Most people have 'AI' companions, called 'Mirrors' also recognized as Ancestral Intelligence, to hold memory, information, reflection, and support in the care of the self and all living species.

Community Infrastructure: The land is organized by decentralized community infrastructures, such as Kinships, which are micro-communities that participate in care and mutual aid/exchange, Nurture Pods, which consist of 3-6 adults co-parenting children conceived through hybridized surrogacy, and networks of cooperative models to grow and harvest algae, fungi, and other plants.

Metaverse: The line between 'IRL' and 'URL' is almost non-existent. Both worlds are considered expressions of existence. Given the rewilding efforts, and limited outdoor/travel time, most connection is nurtured in the metaverse, in 3D worlds, at metaevents. The immersive worlds can stimulate sensations in the body, further closing the gap between universes, into a single universe. Many people work in designing, creating, and facilitating the metaverse. Most folks wear glasses to access and manage their interactions in the metaverse using gestures.

Mothers of Invention: This is the process of transmutation of natural and sustainable materials, like algae and fungi, into functional and wearable goods. They are living tools for Mothers of Invention who are part spiritual leader, part entrepreneur, and part creative - bringing the spirit of nurturing and healing into the process of making.

Spirituality: Communities of practice are predominantly rooted in the reverence and protection of various living beings - like trees, mushrooms, bees and oceans. Congregations draw inspiration, strength and wisdom from these beings, learning new languages of communication, and aligning with energetic rhythms. Practice, ritual, and community are at the centre of these religions. Historical religions endure, but have evolved and are no longer at the centre of systems of organization.

Education: Learning is a life-long process, decentralized, and designed by needs, desires, and learning styles with guidance from 'Mirrors' and practiced in different parts of the metaverse. There is an emphasis on a history of liberation, land-based education, and skills for centering in oneself. Co-kids are typically part of cooperative schools that align with Nurture Pods. Learning and labour are integrated throughout one's life. Everyone is encouraged to be a student and a teacher.

Well-being: Homes and furniture have sensors installed - allowing for anonymized data tracking of well-being data. This allows well-being to be managed through a 'push' system -- offering suggestions based on the data, versus seeking solutions based on symptoms. Well-being is the caretaking of the mind, body, spirit, and the quality of connection across ancestral and living beings.
